Rock Climbing for Kids (H’s Birthday!)

My boy turned 7 this week! I had an idea to take a group of kiddos rock climbing for his party. I have some amazing friends who take kids climbing and they agreed to take this crew. We are blessed to live very near Garden of the Gods, so that’s where we went.

It was a short hike to the rock…

The kids got some great instruction.

Safety first, for sure!

Gear was all set up and ready to go.

H’s class at school plus little sister and one extra friend made eight kiddos.

Here they are taking on the rock…

They were all so brave!

While one friend was climbing, the others were in heaven climbing around, exploring the woods, playing in God’s great creation, and getting very dirty.

Love these kids.

Halfway through I spread a blanket for a little birthday break…

Snacks were packed into a little bag with a caribiner on it. Adventureer’s food… peanuts, Clif Bar and Capri Sun (?). And a little joke. Cause why not?

H noticed that a Clif Bar has a rock climber on the front. And Clif bars are a major treat in our family. He didn’t have to say it more than once to convince me to bring these for a birthday treat instead of hauling in cupcakes! Easy peazy.

So a votive candle in the windy outdoors held on top of a Clif Bar while we sing ‘Happy Birthday’ it is!

Back to the rock for the second half of the climbers.

These are proper rock climbing shoes, right?

All the kids did great. My two did have a little fear when it was time to repel down. Sweet N probably weighed more than the rope. Combine the fear and the fact that she couldn’t really make the rope lower down much with her body weight meant she needed someone to come help her a bit…

Coach Matthew to the rescue!
