Breakfast Buffet and Escort Home (Aswan and Luxor Part 11)
I have a passion for breakfast buffets.
I am not alone in this.
In anticipation of our last morning at the breakfast buffet, Sweet N had completed an ambitious plan of her courses that she would enjoy that morning.
She had written them out in this cutest tiny notebook.
1. Roll and sausage
2. Toast and cucumber
3. 2 crepes
4. Roll and cucumber
5. sausage
6. 1/2 juice
7. Toast
8. Donut
9. Anything
10. Anything
10 courses! Can hardly believe that tiny thing could do it, but I think she did!
She is so much fun!
This guy isn't as varied in his eating. He probably just ate a few bowls of chocolate cereal, which the favorite breakfast buffet item for my boys.
After we ate we took a little stretch to enjoy the garden one more time before loading up the car.
Once we loaded up, we drove by where some good friends used to live on this little side street.
However, as we were pulling away from the hotel, the police stopped us. They are quite concerned about the safety of foreigners in Egypt, and so when we informed them we were driving back to our home in Cairo, they decided that they wanted to ensure our safety by offering us an escort.
At each stop, another office would greet us and take Mike's phone number. And so as the day went on, he was taking more and more phone calls from officers who very kindly wanted to check up on the progress of our drive.
Officer: How are you?
Mike: Fine
Officer: Where are you now?
Mike: I am not sure... somewhere in the desert.
Officer: How far are you from Cairo?
Mike: I am not sure... closer than I was when you called me ten minutes ago...
(Conversations in Arabic, of course)
This continued repeatedly.
Oh my.
In the meantime... this is how you attempt to see your Kindle when it's so bright outside.
And this was a delightful book to read aloud on this entire trip. I found it interesting to consider life on the deserted prairie in America's past while gazing over the deserted desert in Africa. Maybe there isn't a big difference? Hmm...
And so we drove and drove.
And laughed about our 6 escorts until we finally arrived to our sweet home in Cairo.
A trip to remember.
Fondly.
What adventures we get to have, we don't take it for granted. Such a gift.

She did not want me to see it. But I saw. And I took this photo. I hope someday she will understand...

And so as we hit the open road, so did this police truck... leading the way and keeping us safe (although there was no danger AT ALL).
And this continued for the entire day. Six police escorts in total... trading off at different places in the road, often requiring us to pull over and wait for a new one to arrive before the old would pass us off.
It was really so kind. And rather inconvenient.
At each stop, another office would greet us and take Mike's phone number. And so as the day went on, he was taking more and more phone calls from officers who very kindly wanted to check up on the progress of our drive.

Swimming, Sunset, Ice Cream (Aswan and Luxor Part 10)
The afternoon and evening after The Valley of the Kings and Carter's House we just wanted to relax at the hotel.
But first, food! We ate from a lot of road-side stand food during this trip. And we loved it!
We love this pool! And A was happy to pracice her floating. She's a GREAT floater! (Like her Mama.)
Then up for baths and rest. And calling between our rooms (they won't allow a family of six to get only one room.) I remember how fun this was as a kid!
Mike really wanted to watch a sunset on the Nile. So down we went. I didn't get tired of walking through this terraced garden on the bank of the Nile.
And then the beautiful sunset...
Then, we decided to find a German Ice Cream shop we saw online...
Horse cart is a pretty easy way to get back and forth to the city center.
Then we walked for quite awhile because we struggled to find the place...
And then we found it.
And it didn't disappoint. Handmade ice creams by a German couple. Even dairy-free!
And then back on a horse cart to get back to the hotel.
That was a full day.
Loved it.
